Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who developed a revolutionary educational system based on observing children's natural learning tendencies. Montessori was born in 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy.
She was raised in an educated, progressive family and was encouraged to pursue her studies. She became the first female physician in Italy, graduating from medical school in 1896. After graduating, Montessori began teaching at a technical school for girls in Rome. In 1907, Montessori opened the Casa Dei Bambini (Children’s House) in San Lorenzo, Italy. This was a revolutionary concept in education, as it was the first school to focus on the children's individual needs. Instead of traditional teaching methods, Montessori developed a system of hands-on learning that allowed children to explore and discover for themselves. She also encouraged teachers to observe the children and tailor their instruction to each student’s abilities and interests. She also advocated for a “prepared environment” where children could work with specially designed materials in a classroom to foster exploration and creativity.
